All About Beauty Sleep
We’ve heard the term ‘Beauty Sleep’ countless times, but that leads to the question - is it real? Sleep is a crucial part of your health and wellness. Not getting enough sleep or having disturbances while sleeping can lead to health issues and declining energy and mental clarity.
This connection is also made between sleep and appearance. Simply put, if you aren’t feeling well or aren’t rested, it is likely to show. That’s because sleep deprivation causes a decrease in blood flow to the skin surrounding your face.
Research even says that one night of poor sleep can cause hanging eyelids, swollen eyes, darker undereye circles, paler skin, increased wrinkles and fine lines, and more droopy corners of the mouth. One study found that only getting five hours a night can lead to twice as many fine lines as sleeping seven would.
When you sleep, your skin has an increased rate of producing collagen, which helps to keep your skin’s elasticity. It also uses this time to repair itself since it isn’t defending itself from the sun and other harmful exposure. Blood flow is also more consistent, which helps your skin to soak up all the benefits from your skincare products and to keep a lively, rosy cheek face for when you wake up.
Here are some additional tips to make the most of your beauty sleep:
Use an overnight moisturizer
Did you know that your body loses more water while sleeping than awake? It’s important to use a hydrating moisturizer or sleeping mask before bed to keep your skin from drying out and give the product time to absorb.
Keep a glass of water nearby
On par with a moisturizer is one of the best hydration tips around - drink water! Keep a glass of water on your nightstand to stay hydrated during the night. It is also more likely not to disturb your sleep if you have it close by for a quick sip if you wake up.
Sleep on your back
Sleeping on a rough cotton surface can irritate your skin and compress your face for long hours at a time, resulting in wrinkles. Some wrinkles on the face and chest can result from sleeping on our stomachs or sides. A simple solution to this is sleeping on your back.
Skin-friendly pillowcase
Not much of a back sleeper? Don’t worry. You can also try to switch up your pillowcase to one that is skin-friendly. A satin or silk pillow minimizes skin irritation and compression, while copper-oxide pillowcases may reduce crow’s feet and other fine lines.
Get enough zzz’s
Experts recommend getting 7-9 hours of sleep each night to reap the benefits and feel your best. Avoid screentime before you go to bed to avoid an overactive mind that will keep you up late. Plus, for the perfect ambiance, design your bedroom - we’re talking bedding, room temp, and scents - all for your comfort so you can drift off to dreamland swiftly.
Stay on top of your health, wellness, and beauty and make the most of your sleep.
